Every human life is a gift from God, from the very first breath to the very last. For nearly two decades, a faithful group of parishioners at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (SJE) in Birchwood has quietly lived out that truth with their own hands.
Since 2007, these volunteers have gathered at SJE to assemble Hospice and Newborn kits for Global Health Ministries. Each kit is filled with supplies chosen for a specific need. Newborn kits welcome babies who are just entering our world, and Hospice kits bring comfort and dignity to those who are preparing for their journey home to God.
Small Gifts With a Lasting Reach
Each kit costs about $5 to make. Once assembled, the kits are driven by volunteers to the Global Health Ministries headquarters in Minneapolis and then sent on to developing countries around the world.
The kit itself is only the beginning. Each time one is placed in the hands of a mother, a family, or a patient, a relationship for healthcare begins. That relationship opens the door to meeting other needs of the very poor and vulnerable. It is a beautiful reminder of the words of Our Lord: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).
How You Can Help
We are blessed and thankful for the continued support of our Four Parish Family. There are two simple ways to be part of this work of mercy.
Make a monetary donation. Place your gift in an envelope marked “Hospice Newborn Kits” and drop it in the collection basket at any of our parishes, or bring it to the Four Parish Office.
Help assemble kits. All are welcome to serve alongside this devoted group. Kit making takes place at St. John the Evangelist following the 8:30 am Mass on these Thursdays:
- November 5 and 12
- December 3 and 10
No experience is needed, only willing hands and a generous heart. Come for an hour, enjoy good company, and help carry Christ’s love to the ends of the earth.

Lord Jesus, bless the hands that prepare these kits and the hearts of all who receive them. Welcome each newborn with Your love, comfort each soul nearing its journey home, and draw us all closer to You. Amen.
