Reconciliation at 4 Parishes 1 Faith
Reconciliation is the sacrament in which Christ, through the ministry of a priest, forgives the sins we commit after Baptism and restores us to the fullness of grace. It is not a courtroom but an encounter with mercy, a chance to lay down what weighs on us and hear, in the person of the priest, Christ’s own words of forgiveness. Whether your child is preparing to receive this sacrament for the first time or it has been years since your last confession, we are glad you are here, and we want to walk with you through it.
First Reconciliation for Children
Children preparing for First Holy Communion also prepare for their first celebration of Reconciliation, since the Church asks that children confess for the first time before receiving the Eucharist. To prepare for this sacrament, families are asked to do the following:
- Enroll in Religious Education – Register your child for the parish’s First Communion preparation program, which includes First Reconciliation preparation, through the St. Joseph faith formation office.
- Attend Preparation Classes – Children learn how to examine their conscience, what to say, and the meaning of contrition and forgiveness, using materials provided by the parish.
- Practice the Rite – Children walk through the steps of confession with a priest or catechist ahead of time, so nothing feels unfamiliar on the day itself.
- Celebrate First Reconciliation – Children receive the sacrament for the first time at a parish First Reconciliation service scheduled ahead of First Communion.
Returning to Confession as an Adult
Some adults have not been to confession in years, whether from busyness, uncertainty about what to say, or simply time away from the Church. There is no need to feel embarrassed. The Lord is waiting, and so are we.
- Just Come – You do not need to call ahead. Confessions are heard at our regularly scheduled times, or you are welcome to request a private appointment if that would feel more comfortable.
- Don’t Worry About the Words – You can say it has been a long time, or that you are not sure how to begin, and the priest will help you through it. An examination of conscience guide is available from the parish office if you would like to prepare beforehand.
- Schedule a Private Appointment if Needed – If our regular times do not work for you, or you would simply like more time, call the parish office and a priest will arrange to meet with you.
"Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."
