Baptism at 4 Parishes 1 Faith

Baptism is the first and foundational sacrament of the Christian life. Through the waters of Baptism, we are cleansed of original sin, incorporated into the Body of Christ, and welcomed as beloved children of God. Whether you are inquiring for a newborn, a child, or yourself, we are glad you are taking this step, and we want to walk with you through it.

Baptism for Infants and Children

The Church joyfully celebrates the Baptism of infants and young children, trusting that parents will raise them in the practice of the faith. To prepare for this sacrament, families are asked to do the following:

  1. Contact the Parish Office Early – Please contact the St. Joseph parish office at least three months before your desired Baptism date. This allows adequate time for preparation and scheduling with a priest.
  2. Complete the Online Preparation Course – Parents and godparents are required to complete a preparation course before the Baptism takes place. We use Belonging: Baptism in the Family of God from Ascension Press. This course can be accessed online at ascensionpress.com.
  3. Meet with a Priest – After completing the online course, families will meet with one of our priests to discuss the sacrament, answer any questions, and finalize preparation.
  4. Choose Godparents Carefully – The Church asks that godparents be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and who are living in accord with the Catholic faith. A godparent must be at least 16 years of age. A non-Catholic Christian may serve as a Christian witness alongside a Catholic godparent, but may not serve as the sole godparent.

Baptism for Adults and Older Children (OCIA)

Adults and older children who are seeking Baptism enter the Church through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), a journey of faith formation that culminates in receiving the sacraments of initiation, typically at the Easter Vigil.

St. Joseph welcomes inquirers on an ongoing basis throughout the year. There is no set enrollment deadline. If you or someone you love is asking questions about the Catholic faith and considering Baptism, now is a good time to reach out.

  1. Contact the Parish Office – Reach out to the St. Joseph parish office to express your interest or ask questions. You do not need to have everything figured out before you call. Our staff will connect you with the right person and answer your initial questions with care.
  2. Begin the OCIA Journey – OCIA is not simply a class. It is a community experience of prayer, Scripture, and formation, guided by sponsors and parish community members. The process moves at a pace suited to each individual, and no one is rushed.
  3. Receive the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil – For most adults, the journey culminates on Holy Saturday at the Easter Vigil, the most sacred night of the year, when they are baptized, confirmed, and receive their first Holy Communion.
  • "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
