To paraphrase Jesus, when you cared for those who were sick and visited those who were imprisoned, you did it for me (Matthew 25:36, 40). Imprisoned does not have to mean only the incarcerated. It can also mean those who are trapped at home because of sickness or circumstance.
Most are not alone. A spouse or a child is often their caregiver around the clock. But we are made for community, and it is always nice to see a new face every now and then. A visit brings a connection to the parish family they so wish to be a part of, and sometimes a much-needed break for the caregiver.
If you are an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, this is an opportunity to take Communion to those who are unable to come to Mass to receive it. If you are not, then it is an opportunity to spend time with parishioners who may feel left out of the community they so desperately need to be a part of.
Take a bulletin, take 30 minutes of your time, and take Jesus, either in the Eucharist or in simply being present to those who need to be visited because they can’t leave the bars of their home, the chains of sickness that have them stuck in bed.
To get started, call the parish office.
