Every person who enters the Catholic Church through OCIA is assigned a sponsor, and that relationship is one of the most personal and meaningful in the entire initiation process. A sponsor is not a teacher or a program coordinator. They are a companion, a witness, and a friend in faith, someone who walks beside a candidate or catechumen from the early stages of inquiry all the way to the Easter Vigil and beyond.

The sponsor’s primary role is simply to be present. They attend OCIA sessions alongside the person they are sponsoring, accompany them through the rites and celebrations of the initiation process, and make themselves available for the kind of honest, unhurried conversation that does not always happen in a group setting. They answer questions when they can, admit when they do not know the answer, and point always toward the Church and toward Christ.

Sponsors also serve as a living example of what it looks like to be a practicing Catholic. Not a perfect one, but a real one. Someone who goes to Mass, receives the sacraments, prays, and tries to live the faith in the ordinary circumstances of daily life. That witness, more than anything else, is what a sponsor offers.

The commitment runs for the duration of the OCIA process, typically from the fall through the Easter Vigil in the spring, and sponsors are asked to participate as fully as possible throughout. It is a meaningful investment of time, and those who have served as sponsors will tell you it tends to deepen their own faith just as much as it serves the person they are walking with.

If you are a confirmed Catholic in good standing with the Church and feel called to walk with someone on their journey home, we warmly invite you to consider becoming an OCIA sponsor. Please reach out to the parish office or your OCIA coordinator to learn more.
